No trace of peace anywhere?

The cry from the heart for peace, has echoed down through the ages, yet it still eludes mankind. Few individuals, let alone countries, can say that they experience a deep and lasting peace in their lives. Individual peace still seems beyond man's reach, while world peace is non-existent. Sathya Sai Baba confirmed this, in the opening line of His Divine Discourse, (22nd November 2002), on the subject of, Character True End of Education, "No trace of peace anywhere".

True peace is sought by mankind in the wrong places; he invariably seeks it in the material world. He assumes it is elsewhere, -anywhere rather than deep within himself. Swami has said that if you have peace in your heart, you will have peace in your home. If you have peace in your home, you will have peace in the community. If you have peace in the community, you will have peace in your country. If you have peace in your country, you will have peace in the world! For mankind to have global peace, it is necessary to plant the seed of peace within ourselves before we can expect it to take root and blossom, spreading its branches over the entire world. As long as there is disharmony within families, there seems to be little likelihood of peace being established globally.

Swami also said, referring to peace, in His December 1978 discourse; "That is some forty years away. At that time the world will be peaceful. That is the name: Prema Sai. All will be love, -love, love, love everywhere". He also said to John Hislop, that He cannot give peace of mind, ...that one has to work for it, if it is to be brought about. Also, as Mario Mazzolini stated in his excellent book, 'A Catholic Priest Meets Sai Baba', only by, "...learning, practicing and teaching the art of living together in peace and amity in the home. The peace in the world can be established without delay or travail."

Peace is just one of the Five Pillars of Sathya Sai's mission:- Truth, Love, Peace, Right Conduct and Non-Violence. In fact , they cannot be seen as separate values, they are intricately woven together, in-so-far as they cannot individually exist without the relationship with any of the other four, ie. you cannot have peace without love, or non-violence without right conduct, and so on. The alternative to these "pillars" is to be smothered in fear, mistrust, lacking in courage and failing in our duties. These Five Values were the chief characteristics of all the Avatars and holy men, in history: the love and peace they projected were sufficient to change the hearts and minds of men.

Let us pray the prayer of Peace; Asato Maa, each morning and evening, concluding with the lines, "...Let there be Peace, and Peace, Eternal Peace." Perhaps then we will be playing our part in Sai's Divine Mission for Peace.
